Decision guide
How Do You Choose Safer Window Coverings for a Child’s Room?
Start with a cordless window covering: CPSC identifies it as the safest choice where young children are present. Then check the exact model’s instructions, mounting requirements, and fit in your window. Plan furniture away from the window before comparing fabrics. Choose privacy and light control using a sample and the proposed installation, rather than assuming a blackout label or a convincing room image settles the decision.
Short verdict
What we found
- Screen the operating mechanism before choosing the fabric. Ask for the exact model and its full instructions, including any additional window layer you plan to keep.
- Record the complete fitting footprint and room use. Glass width alone does not tell you whether a roller, bracket, curtain stack, or window handle will fit.
- Treat the pictured desk beside the window as a layout to review, not a child-room recommendation. No cord inspection, installation check, or blackout test was performed.
Method and boundaries
How this guide was built
We checked current CPSC consumer guidance, a named manufacturer specification, and one existing RoomRearrange bedroom pair. This is a buying worksheet and visual review, not a comparison of installed products. In a reader’s sample comparison, keep the window, mounting proposal, viewing position, and time of day consistent while changing one fabric candidate.
Review criteria
- Operating mechanism and complete product documentation
- Measured opening, fitting envelope, and window movement
- Furniture placement and adult access to operate the covering
- Privacy, light at the edges, care, and unresolved installation questions
Known limitation
No window covering was installed or tested for this article. The example has no verified dimensions or identifiable covering mechanism. We cannot certify a product, approve a child’s room, predict sleep, or establish local legal compliance. CPSC supplies U.S. consumer safety guidance; the IKEA example supplies only that UK product’s dimensions and instructions.
Decision tool
Use this window-by-window buying sheet
Give each window a name and put the model code beside every answer. Work down the table before ordering. An unresolved mechanism or fitting question belongs on the supplier’s list, even when the fabric is already your favorite.
| Decision | Record in the room | Ask for or check | Hold the order when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating mechanism | Identify the existing blind or curtain and every layer that will remain. Photograph labels and controls without involving a child. | The complete candidate’s cordless description, instructions, and operating demonstration. Include any separate liner or retained blind. | The seller cannot identify the mechanism or provide instructions for the exact model. |
| Furniture plan | Sketch the bed, desk, chair, storage, and toys around the window, including movable pieces. | A revised layout away from the window, following the CPSC guidance discussed below. | The proposal depends on copying the pictured window-side desk into a child’s room. |
| Recess or wall mount | Record opening width and height at several points, recess depth, trim, handles, and the path of the opening sash. | The supplier’s measuring method, complete fitting dimensions, mounting locations, and required operating space. | The order form’s definition of width or drop is unclear, or a handle occupies the fitting’s space. |
| Fixing and permission | Record the proposed wall, ceiling, or frame location and any existing hardware. Note if the home is rented. | Complete mounting instructions; substrate and fixing assessment by an installer when uncertain; required landlord permission. | The installation needs an unapproved alteration, or the mounting surface and fixing method remain unresolved. |
| Privacy and light | Write the actual need: obscuring the street view, controlling morning light, or both. Mark where the fabric would end. | A physical fabric sample and the supplier’s explanation of edge coverage in your chosen mounting arrangement. | A sample is opaque but nobody has resolved the uncovered sides, top, or bottom of the proposed installation. |
| Operation and care | Record how an adult will reach the control and carry out the stated cleaning routine. | A permitted demonstration and the exact care sheet. Keep these separate from the room’s color decision. | Operation is awkward for the adult user, or the required care is impractical for the household. |
Worked examples
A bedroom image that leaves the window decision unresolved
This labeled RoomRearrange product example combines an original bedroom photo with an AI-generated proposal. It is a general bedroom brief, with no documented child occupant or child-safety assessment. Use it to spot missing information before copying a layout; it is not an approved children’s-room scheme.
Before
Proposed directionBedroom: a moved bed, a bare window, and a desk to reconsider
The recognizable cane bed moves from the window wall to the right wall. The black desk moves in the opposite direction, placing its top and chair beside the window. A dark accent wall, rust bedding, wall lights, artwork, and a low cabinet also appear. The uncovered window gives no evidence of a blind’s controls, a curtain’s fittings, or closed-position coverage. The image can prompt a comparison of a window sample beside the retained cane frame and proposed rust textile. It cannot tell you what to buy or confirm a child’s layout. The window-side desk remains a reason to revise this arrangement before using it for that purpose.

Choose the mechanism before the pattern
CPSC’s current Window Covering Cords guidance, accessed on 16 October 2026, recommends cordless coverings where young children are present. Its advice includes moving cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and covering cords, preferably to a different wall. Apply that layout check to rooms a child visits as well as the bedroom.
If replacement is not immediately possible, use CPSC’s linked instructions and obtain product-specific help. CPSC says its interim cord measures reduce the hazard but do not eliminate it, and some retrofit kits leave dangling-cord hazards unresolved. This article does not provide a cord-cutting, knotting, or homemade conversion procedure.
At the shop, ask to see how the complete candidate opens and closes. Read the instructions for the model you would receive, rather than accepting a description of the range. If an older blind will stay behind new curtains, record it as a separate item. Adding a decorative layer does not answer the questions about that existing mechanism.
Keep the room measurements separate from the order size
Draw the opening and label the recess, trim, sill, handles, and opening direction. Record width and height at several positions and note any variation. Give the supplier these raw measurements, with units, and follow its instructions for the proposed mount. Ask which deductions the supplier makes. Do not subtract an allowance twice because two measuring guides use different definitions.
The current IKEA UK listing for TRETUR light grey, article 603.804.60, makes the distinction concrete: its fabric width is 100 cm, while its roller width is 103.4 cm. The listed length is 195 cm, and IKEA says this blind cannot be cut. Those figures describe one product; they are not recommended dimensions for a child’s window.
That listing describes cordless operation and inside-recess, outside-recess, or ceiling mounting. It also calls for fixings suited to the wall or ceiling material; those screws are not included. Choosing a different mount changes the questions the installer must resolve. Check the complete instructions for the exact item, especially when existing trim or a projecting handle competes with its footprint.
Resolve installation before spending time on the color
Keep a short installation note beside the drawing: proposed mount; surface; product code; instruction document; person confirming the fixings; permission needed; unresolved question. You do not need to diagnose an unfamiliar wall yourself. Ask a competent installer to assess it when its construction or the fitting requirements are unclear.
In a rental, obtain any required landlord permission before removing supplied coverings, drilling, or altering frames. Send the actual product and mounting proposal so the answer covers the intended work. A no-drill description is not a substitute for the product instructions or the rental agreement. If the proposed installation is declined, return to the shortlist rather than improvising another attachment.
For motorized candidates, add the power arrangement and all supplied components to the supplier review. Have a qualified electrician assess any electrical work that is required. A room picture cannot establish compatibility or approve wiring. Keep a manufacturer’s installation requirement in the buying note instead of turning it into a generic DIY step.
Compare privacy and fabric after the fitting is settled
Write the light problem in everyday terms: the street can see in at night, early sun reaches the pillow, or the room needs privacy while retaining some daylight. Bring this note to the supplier. Ask how the proposed product and mounting position address it, and what remains uncovered. A fabric sample alone cannot show the whole installed result.
Hold a permitted sample beside the actual bedding and bed frame in daylight and under the evening lights. Look at its face and reverse. In the pictured room, you could compare a pale sample with the cane frame and rust bedding, but that combination has not been generated or tested here. Choose the sample in the real room; the screen does not establish its color.
Read care instructions before ordering a large textile. For the named TRETUR, IKEA prohibits washing and specifies wiping with a cloth dampened in mild cleaner. That is one product’s care method, not a rule for all roller blinds. If your shortlist includes fabric curtains, obtain their separate heading, lining, and care information rather than transferring a blind’s specifications to them.
Finish with a shortlist that another adult can check
Make one card per window: location; product and model; mechanism confirmed; room measurements; supplier order dimensions; mount; permission; installer question; sample decision; care; next action. Mark each candidate ready to order, waiting for an answer, or rejected. Keep a copy of the instructions and the supplier’s sizing confirmation with the card.
For a visual preview, state the real opening, retained bed, and revised furniture positions first. Request one fabric or color direction, and keep the window outline unchanged. Review the output against your drawing. If it invents an opening, hides an unresolved fitting, or returns furniture to the window, revise the proposal. Take the buying card to the supplier; the generated picture supplies no installation approval.
