Decision guide
What Should You Measure Before Buying Curtains, Rugs, or Art?
Measure the room as you use it: the furniture that will stay, doors and drawers in motion, window fittings, and the wall area available for art. Then record each candidate’s complete dimensions separately from those room measurements. Mark its outline and try the usual activities before ordering. Keep uncertain product allowances, mounting details, and permissions on a waiting list rather than filling the gaps from a photo.
Short verdict
What we found
- Use one drawing with named walls and a single unit. Keep raw room dimensions, proposed outlines, and supplier order sizes in separate fields.
- Check moving objects and daily activities against the complete candidate: curtain stack, rug plus pad, and outside frame dimensions all matter.
- A blank field is a useful reason to pause an order. A generated picture cannot supply missing measurements, material samples, or installation approval.
Method and boundaries
How this guide was built
We built a cross-category worksheet from the decisions a buyer needs to record, reviewed one existing RoomRearrange living-room pair, and checked current Dunelm measuring instructions and one named IKEA frame specification. This is an editorial planning tool, not a measured room survey. For your own comparison, hold the furniture plan and intended use fixed while changing one curtain, rug, or art candidate.
Review criteria
- A named start and endpoint for every room measurement
- Complete product footprint and the supplier’s definition of order size
- Furniture contact, opening movement, and occupied routes
- Unresolved sample, instruction, permission, or installer checks
Known limitation
We have not measured this pictured room or installed the products discussed. The worksheet does not prescribe circulation standards, heater clearances, mounting loads, or universal design proportions. Actual dimensions, household use, product instructions, and any required professional assessment decide those questions.
Decision tool
Fill this room sheet before comparing shopping baskets
Write the room name, date, units, and furniture-plan version at the top. Add a photo or sketch reference beside each measurement. The printable PDF below has space for the room record, candidate details, and unanswered questions; make another copy for each candidate if needed.
| Record | Measure or describe in the room | Keep separate on the candidate card | Pause the order if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room and fixed edges | Draw walls A–D; record usable wall lengths, lower ceiling features, openings, trim, projecting fittings, and fixed equipment. | Product code, chosen location, and the complete installed footprint. | The proposal relies on hiding a fixed feature or guessing an unseen wall. |
| Retained furniture | Record width, depth, height, and relevant foot positions. Include the chair in its intended angle and a recliner when open. | Which furniture contacts the rug; which piece anchors the art; which item meets the curtain. | Moving a seat changes the arrangement the measurements describe. |
| Openings and everyday route | Mark door swings, open drawers, pulled-out chairs, and the route people actually use. Record the narrow points. | Candidate edges, thickness, projections, and any delivery or installation access needed. | A usual activity conflicts with the outline or an access question is unanswered. |
| Curtain position | Record opening and trim, fitting position, usable track or pole span, stack space on each side, and drop start and endpoint. | Heading, panel count, stated width basis, finished drop, lining, and supplier allowances. | Nobody has confirmed how your measurements become this seller’s order dimensions. |
| Rug outline | Mark the chosen contact points and candidate length and width; note nearby doors and the exposed edges people cross. | Exact size, stated tolerances, rug-plus-pad thickness, floor compatibility, and care instructions. | The available size misses the intended feet or the product specification leaves a conflict unresolved. |
| Art envelope | Measure usable wall width and height around the furniture, fittings, and nearby fabric; trial the whole group outline. | Outside frame size and depth, group gaps, complete weight, and mounting instructions. | Only print dimensions are known, or the attachment and any required permission remain unresolved. |
Worked examples
The same rug does not connect the same seats
This labeled RoomRearrange product example pairs an original living-room photo with an AI-generated rearrangement. It illustrates why a measurement sheet needs furniture positions as well as product dimensions. No tape measurements, installed-product trial, or independent fit test accompanies the pair.
Before
Proposed directionA moved armchair changes the rug decision
The recognizable tan sofa, rust chair, oval table, and media unit remain. The chair moves from behind the sofa to the window end; the rug stays under the table and meets the sofa, while the chair remains beyond its far edge. If the brief requires that chair to join the rug-defined seating group, the new position needs a fresh footprint check. The bare wall and window have no installed art or curtains to assess. Adding either would be an untested proposal, and the heater below the window leaves a product-specific fitting question. Apparent floor gaps supply no usable clearance figure.

- → Sofa and table positions
- → Furniture relationships to rug edges; dimensions remain unknown
Draw the room once, with endpoints you can find again
Give the room a name and each wall a letter. Draw the door and window positions, then mark fixed cupboards, sockets, and projecting equipment. Choose one unit for the sheet. Label each measurement with its endpoints: “wall B, trim to corner” is more useful than “wall width.” Keep the sketch approximate; the written measurements carry the dimensions.
Record the furniture in the arrangement you intend to keep. Note the date and give the drawing a version, even if that just means “sofa against wall C.” When a chair moves, check which readings depend on it. This avoids taking a rug measurement from yesterday’s layout and combining it with today’s curtain plan.
Leave uncertain or inaccessible readings blank and name who will confirm them. A supplier or installer can measure an awkward fitting as part of its service. Do not turn an estimate into an exact-looking number merely to finish the form.
Give every curtain measurement a start point
Write down the opening measurements before deciding on the finished curtain. Add the fitting position, space beside the opening for gathered fabric, and any handles or furniture occupying that space. Choose a hem endpoint that you can identify on the drawing. A curtain’s parked position deserves a check as well as its closed position.
Dunelm’s measuring guide, accessed on 17 October 2026, distinguishes eyelet drops measured from the top of the pole from pencil-pleat drops measured from the ring eye or top of the track. It measures pole or track width without decorative finials. These are that retailer’s instructions for the stated headings; confirm the method for your chosen system.
Ask the seller to write down panel count, what the quoted width represents, and any fullness or fitting allowances. Keep that answer beside the raw measurements. Where a heater, vent, or other equipment is involved, obtain the exact equipment and covering instructions and have an installer resolve an uncertain arrangement. The window in the example is not evidence that fabric can be placed around its heater.
Try the rug outline while the room is occupied
Choose which feet the rug should include before marking an outline. Set chairs at their intended angle and measure the actual contact points. Then mark an available candidate size with a removable method approved for the surface. Paper corners can show a footprint without leaving adhesive on a finish. Neither method simulates the rug’s thickness.
Sit down, pull the chair out, open the door, and use the route with the room in its normal state. Record the narrowest points and any conflict, rather than applying a generic gap to every household. If the outline works only after removing a chair you use each evening, change the outline or the furniture plan.
Check the exact rug and pad specifications before ordering, including thickness, size tolerances, and floor compatibility. Ask for a sample where available. The outline answers a footprint question; it cannot establish softness, edge behavior, cleaning results, or how the rug will sit beneath furniture.
Measure the frame that will arrive
For art, record the outside frame dimensions and the usable wall around it. Check the view while seated and standing, with nearby curtains in their proposed open position. For a group, include the spaces between frames in the total span. A paper mock-up lets you compare placement without pretending that one furniture-to-art ratio fits every wall.
The current IKEA UK RÖDALM listing for article 705.489.25 illustrates the naming problem. Its 50 × 70 cm picture size without the mount sits in a frame listed as 52 cm wide and 72 cm high. The frame depth is 3 cm. Record the outside dimensions for the wall trial; those figures identify one product and do not identify any object in our room example.
Obtain the complete weight and mounting instructions for the item you choose. Have a competent installer assess an uncertain substrate or fixing, and obtain any required landlord permission before attaching it. An outline on paper resolves placement, not the attachment.
Bring the three candidates back to the same drawing
Now check the overlaps. Does the curtain stack occupy the wall intended for a frame? Does a new rug edge reach the door’s path? Does the chair position used for measuring leave room to operate the window? Resolve the conflict on the common plan before deciding which color to buy.
Use the one-page PDF linked below as a room record and candidate card. Print at actual size for the writing fields; the drawing box is deliberately not a scale plan. Record the supplier’s confirmed order dimensions, a sample decision, and the person responsible for each unanswered question. Mark the candidate “ready,” “waiting,” or “rejected.” Waiting is appropriate when a dimension that could change the order remains unknown.
For a RoomRearrange preview, describe the real room and the pieces that must stay, then ask for one visual direction. Keep the measurement sheet alongside it. Review the returned openings, furniture, and edges against the drawing, and take the confirmed dimensions to the seller. The image helps compare a proposal; the buying record determines what can be ordered.
